Do you know how many hummingbird species there are in Trinidad and Tobago, and how to identify them?
Trinidad and Tobago may be small, but the islands have an exceptional hummingbird list. Seventeen species have been recorded in Trinidad and six in Tobago, including one Tobago species not found in Trinidad. Together, that makes 18 recorded species across the two islands, with one additional species still awaiting official confirmation in Trinidad.
A remarkable share of the world’s hummingbirds
There are about 365 hummingbird species worldwide, all found in the Western Hemisphere, from Alaska to Argentina. Against that global backdrop, Trinidad and Tobago’s 18 recorded species are a remarkable tally for two islands of this size.
Rachel’s hummingbird design
For more than 20 years, Rachel has photographed hummingbirds across Trinidad and Tobago. Those photographs inspired a detailed design celebrating every hummingbird species found in the islands.
The design is available as a poster and a tea towel / wall hanging.
